The star classification is a common one for rating hotels in the countries of Southeast Asia. Higher star ratings indicate more luxury. In some countries, there is an official body with standard criteria for classifying hotels, but in many others there are none. In Southeast Asia there are no common system for classification of hotels, although there are currently moves for some form of a harmonized regional system. To trust the classification for a specific hotel it is therefore important to know who has classified the hotel. It could be the travel agent, the hotel itself or any tourist organization, and some are more objective than other.
In most cases hotels in Southesat Asia are of a very high standard and reasonably priced. When it comes to service and facilities available many hotels in Southeast Asia are actually better than the ranking they promote, a hotel marked as a four star often compares to a five star hotel in other places of the world. A good way to find out about the standard of the hotel is to visit its website before you make a decision to book. Remember to check service charges and tax, often they are not included in the price you can find on the website or are being quoted, and in some cases these charges can add as much as 25%-30% to the daily rate.
Some visitors to Southeast Asia want to pay as little as possible for a hotel, and they therefore prefer to stay at hostels or cheap hotels with very basic rooms, sometimes with shared facilities such as bathroom. Hostels and cheap hotels in Southeast Asia can be of a very poor standard, with no air conditioning or other amenities such as lounge, swimming pool, television, room telephone, safe or reception service. Often you will also find limited fire safety standards.
