Java

Java is the Indonesia's heartland and it is also very popular among visitors to the country.

Java has a lot of people packed on a not so big island, and some big cities including the capital Jakata. Most of the original rainforest on Java has now been removed for human habitation and agriculture, and the Javan Rhinoceros and tigers are now critically endangered. Ujung Kulon National Park on the southern tip of West Java is a wildlife reserve of 51,000 hectares covering the Udjung Kulon peninsula and the nearby islands of Panaitan and Peucang. The reserve is a dense forest and is the home of the last surviving one-horned Javan Rhinoceros of which only 50 remain. Ujong Kulon is accessible by boat and the closest departure point is Labuan on the west coast. An entry permit is needed, issued by the Forest Service at Laban. Ujung Kulon National Park is recognized as a world heritage site.

Borobudur in central Java is the world's largest Buddhist monument, dating from the 8th century, and nearby Prambanan is a remarkable Hindu monument dating from just a few years later.

Bromo-Tenger National Park is named after the 2 popular mountains in Java and one of the most frequently visited attractions in Java. The park is marked by some lofty mountains with active volcanoes. The park is recognized as a World Heritage Site. The Pangandaran region lying in central Java is another tourist hotspot in Java. It offers a blend of natural beauty, gorges, waterfalls, national parks and caverns. The region also has a nice beach called Penanjung and where most of the cottages and hotels are located, however, of modest ratings. Another beach resort area is Pelabuhan Ratu Beach, formerly a fishing village, but now grown into a lovely holiday resort. Carita Beach about 3-4 hours drive to the west of Jakata is a great place for swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing and fishing. This resort offers a complete set of facilities including restaurants, accommodation, motorboats and diving facilities.
