Penang Island is located off the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the Straits of Malacca. It is 293 square kilometers and has a population of around 750,000. Penang Island is connected to the mainland by the 13.5 km (8.5 mi) Penang Bridge, one of the longest bridges in Asia. There are a number of small islets around the island popular for day trips.
Penang Island was the first British trading post in the Far East, and is today one of Malaysia's main tourist draws. The beaches are nice, although the can be found better elsewhere in Malaysia, but this is more than compensated for by the island's rich multicultural history which is full of Chinese, Malay, Indian and European influences. Penang is also known as the "food paradise" of Malaysia. Penang's historic architecture is centered mainly in George Town, Penang's largest city. Its rows of 100 year old shophouses and colonial villas give George Town its distinctive atmosphere. The Aceh Mosque is the oldest house of worship in the city, it sits among Burmese, Thai and Chinese temples.
