Hue was the capital of Vietnam from 1744 when the Nguyen lords controlled all of southern Vietnam from the city. Hue is divided between the old fortified Citadel and the new, smaller area that has developed across the river. The new side contains most of the facilities like hotels, restaurants, shops etc. People come to Hue to see the old Imperial Palaces, the Citadel and the Forbidden Purple City, the Buddhist Pagodas, and the Tombs of the Emperors located along the Perfume River a few kilometers south of the city. Each tomb is a walled compound containing temples, palaces and lakes.
The Citadel was badly damaged during the Tet Offensive in 1968, when it was shelled by the Viet Cong and bombed by the Americans. As a result, some areas are now empty fields with bits of walls, and an explanatory plaque. Other buildings are intact, though, and a few are in sparkling condition. Restoration has been going on for 20 years, but there is still a long way to go.
Hue is a quiet, relaxing city, big enough to be interesting but small enough to walk around. The food is great, maybe the best in Vietnam. There are plenty of cheap traveler and mid-market hotels in Hue, as well as a couple of expensive, luxury hotels. The largest concentration is around the short lane of Pham Ngu Lao.
Hue's small Phu Bai Airport has daily flights to and from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, but flights are quite often disrupted by poor weather during the rainy season (Mid October - Mid December). There are several trains a day to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The journey down south through the Hai Van Pass is particularly scenic.
